The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) is New Zealand's points-based permanent residency programme. Applicants must be under 55, hold a skilled job offer in NZ, and score at least 6 points. From June 2025, certain recognised Indian qualifications may qualify for exemption from IQA, subject to NZQA requirements.

Use INZ's pathway guide at immigration.govt.nz to determine if you have 6 skilled resident points from income, NZ work experience, qualifications, and occupational registration.
Submit a free online EOI at immigration.govt.nz/formshelp/smc-eoi-form. INZ reviews your EOI and invites you to apply if you meet the requirements.
INZ will invite you to apply for the SMC Resident Visa if your EOI is approved. The invitation is time-limited — respond promptly.
Submit the Residence Application (INZ 1000) through Immigration Online with all required documents. Include partner and/or dependent children if applicable.
Pay NZD 6,450 total (NZD 2,880 + NZD 3,570) online.
INZ verifies all information, checks character and health, and may request additional documents. Processing: 40–124 working days.
If approved, you receive a NZ Resident Visa granting the right to live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely.

Previously, Indian degree holders had to pay NZD 900+ and wait months for an International Qualifications Assessment. From June 2025, this is waived for Indian nationals, reducing cost and processing time significantly for the SMC and other PR pathways.
